Thanks a lot for your patience haha :D

No problem ;)
This thread will surely help others to understand it.
Thanks a lot for drawing the schematics.

UrsaMajor wrote:The main use is for mixing, being able to more accurately control the width and position of the channel. Especially if there are stereo effects as inserts earlier in the chain. Some tracks you want wide, and some you want narrow. And secondly, the new "Lock Mono" feature is great for checking the mono compability for the whole song, but this feature would also give you the option to check individual tracks in mono. The example with the "Utility" device in Ableton takes this a step further, and makes the device a full mid/side mixer where you mix between 0-100-200. There are also other kinds of plugins that do this kind of mid/side processing as well.

After some closer look to the code and to your suggestions for the phase inverter, stereo narrowing, the "Utility" device, etc. ....
What would you say about having a "Utility" Effect type, which would allow exactly that.
The benefit of an effect would be that you could apply it at different points of the signal chain (insert fx, send fx, sum fx).
Please let me know what you think.

Just finished the new FX type "Utility".
This is what you get:

P1: Gain 50%..200%
P2: Width -100..+100 (+100 = does not change the signal, 0 = completely mono, -100 = stereo channels swapped, everything in between is a mix of these values)
P3: Left Phase invert
P4: Right Phase invert

P2 lets you completely re-position the signal in the stereo field.
Guess that's pretty much what you're looking for..

Sounds good. Just as a note, the Utility in ableton mixes between MID and SIDE, not between mono and swapping the stereo channels.

0 = completely mono = MID channel
+100 = default stereo = does not change the signal
+200 = only the SIDE channel = will null when later summed to mono

More on MID/SIDE here:

I do however also like the idea of swapping the left and right channels.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm aware of that.
I just somehow found it more useful to have a slider that narrows the signal back to mono (from +100 to 0) and widen it again (from 0 to -100) but with swapped channels.
It's practically the "lock mono" switch, but in form of a slider built into an effect that can be used wherever you need it.

After a some deeper experiments, I must say that these abilities are really useful.
Being able to invert the phase per channel is very helpful in some situations.

Maybe I can pack both into it (mid-side processing and the width parameter) or there might be a Utility I and II in the final release.
Some more experiments will show it.

Sounds really good. If I could dream and its possible, this would be my wishlist:

1) Slider = Gain 50%...200%
2) Slider = Width = Mono/MID ... Stereo ... SIDE
3) Button = Swap L/R (this would swap L+R and, if possible, still make Width mix between swapped stereo and mono)
4) Button = Stereo, Only Left (panned in Center), Only Right (panned in Center)
5) Button = Ø Invert L
6) Button = Ø Invert R

Thanks again.
I really think this app is now entering the next level :)

As it is an effect, the number of buttons & sliders are fixed.
But there are ways to apply (hopefully) all abilities to the given controls ;)

Good news for the weekend;)
It was possible to map all required parameters to the 4 FX sliders.

P1: Gain 50%..200%
P2: Width 0%..200% (0% = Mid only, 100% = Mid+Sides, 200% Sides only)
P3: CH:mode L+R:Stereo, L:Only (used on both out channels), R:Only (used on both out channels, L+R:Swapped
P4: Phase Normal, L:Inverted, R:Inverted, L+R:Inverted

As there is no mechanism in the FX processors yet to disable (grey out) a slider based on another sliders setting, a width setting of 200% will (as expected) result in silence if the CH:mode is set to L:Only or R:Only.

Also, I renamed the Effect to "Stereo Tool". It will be placed in the DYN (dynamic processors) tab of the FX selector.

I must admit that the width is more useful that way, as you can use it exactly as it was in the initial setup, but with the addition to boost the sides.
Thanks again for your detailed explanation and your suggestion.
Really appreciated.
