[FIXED in 5.0] Crash when USB MIDI interface connected Galaxy Tab E

Postby jfuerth » Fri Dec 25, 2015 6:08 pm

Hello,

I have a brand new Galaxy Tab E with the latest software updates (SM-T560NU, Android 5.1.1). I'm trying to connect it to my full-size Korg electric piano through a USB OTG adapter and a USB to MIDI DIN in/out cable.

When I connect the OTG+MIDI cables to the tablet, I get promoted by the OS to open G-Stomper Studio. But as soon as G-Stomper finishes loading, it crashes.

If I first start G-Stomper Studio and then connect the MIDI interface, G-Stomper crashes when I plug in the cables.

The OTG connector is separately a powered one as you suggest in the MIDI device compatibility section of your website. I have verified that the MIDI adapter powers on when the OTG cable is plugged into a power supply, even when not connected to the tablet.

The powered OTG cable is this one, by Afunta: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00EAM8A5 ... UTF8&psc=1

The USB to MIDI DIN cable is this one, made by VicTsing: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00EAM8A5 ... UTF8&psc=1

Final note: when I use the same OTG+MIDI cables with my LG Nexus 5 phone, G-Stomper MIDI connectivity works perfectly. The piano keyboard controls the VA-Beast synth as expected.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

To be honest, I've never used one of these powered USB OTG connectors.
What I recommend in the MIDI device compatibility section of my website is an USB hub with external power.
Even if it logically does pretty much the same, it is still technically different.

And ... such powered cables MUST be compatible with your device.
When you look at the device compatibility list of your powered OTG adapter, you see that it's not built for the gtab E.

That's what amazon says: Nexus 7 Galaxy S2 / S3 / S4 & Galaxy Nexus, Samsung i9100(s2) i9300(s3) i9220(Note N700) i9250(Galaxy Nexus)

I recommend to try with a regular USB OTG connector instead (one without usb power). That way you find out if it's the cable which produces the crash.

Unfortunately the link points to the usb otg cable, not to the usb to din adapter.

But I anyway don't think that the usb to din adapter is the problem.
Since you say that everything works well with the Nexus 5, it's pretty sure that it is a device incompatibility and not a problem with the G-Stomper app.

Thank you for the quick response!

I tried testing the OTG cable compatibility by plugging in a USB mousr, and it worked for both the tablet and the phone with or without external power connected.

I will see if I can get my hands on different OTG cables and MIDI adapters to see if they work better.

For anyone following this thread, here is the correct link to the MIDI adapter that worked on the Nexus 5 (Android 6.0.1): https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00ACGMOA ... UTF8&psc=1

Thanks reporting back.

One question: What G-Stomper Version are you using?
You can check that by pressing help (main screen) and then "about G-Stomper ......"
