Sequencer step via midi G-Stomper (Novation Control XL)

Postby flaep » Wed Feb 17, 2021 7:36 pm

Hi,

Iam currently trying to map my novation control XL to g-stomper. Iam especially interested in getting the flashy lights on it going.

The buttons light up when the controller receives the note a button is mapped to. So far i managed to map eight button to eight tracks and change the volume of each track with the corresponding slider. Video of it in action > https://odysee.com/@flaep:e/lnchcntrlxl%2Bg-stmpr:1?r=CcXXUPhFXWPDfqByaLwtZjTmt7bbhSLh
All buttons, sliders and knobs can be mapped to any note or CC via software. A programmers guide can be found here > https://resource.novationmusic.com/support/product-downloads?product=Launch+Control+XL

It would however be cool if the Button under the sliders would light up to match the activated/deactivated steps of the sequencer. This way one could read/set the current pattern from the controller. Just like with a Beatstep or somtething similar. 16 Lights/Buttons 16 Steps.

Is this possible? if its not, this post becomes a feature request :)

It depends on what's required from the technical point of view to light such a button up.
If it you can fire a MIDI note ON to light the button up, and then a MIDI note OFF to turn it off again, then yes, it's possible.

You can see this in action in the following videos.

What you need to do is to enable MIDI out and fire the note events towards your controller. That's all the magic.

MIDI transmission:
https://www.planet-h.com/gstomper/docs/ ... part32.htm

Default IN/OUT ports:
https://www.planet-h.com/gstomper/docs/ ... part33.htm

You can verify if MIDI out is active using the IN/OUT indicators:
https://www.planet-h.com/gstomper/docs/ ... part29.htm

Setup MIDI channels/ports:
https://www.planet-h.com/gstomper/docs/ ... part46.htm
You must set a specific MIDI channel to whatever module you want to map (global, sampler tracks, synth tracks).
Selecting "all" as channel does not allow to activate MIDI out.

Thank you for your reply.
As you can tell from my video I already managed to light up buttons when the track is triggered.

I want to be able to see what steps are toggled.
If step one of track one is enabled the first button should be lit up too and so on.
Also if the first button is pressed, the first step should be enabled. Like in the app where you can program the steps at the bottom bar. I dont know the correct lingo for it ^^

I want to mirror the steps to the controller

Lights can be triggered or toggled by sending CC or a note. Any note or CC can be set. I have however not found a way to get the current step from g-stomper.

Got it now. I misunderstood your first post. Thanks for the clarification.
Unfortunately this is not possible, sorry.

Hi,

thank you for your reply and sorry for my late one.
The app is overall great and I managed to use it as a sequencer for an Yahama su10 and Alesis SR-16.

With not possible you mean not implemented or not possible (feasible)?

Thanks a lot for the kind words. I'm glad to hear that you're happy with the app.

It means it's not implemented.
Theoretically, speaking as a pure developer, everything is possible.
But with the concept of the app in mind, it's rather un-likely, that this gets implemented.

If you look at the current MIDI setup of the app, then you see that MIDI only controls the instruments (like if you control a hardware synth or drum module, noteOn/Off, CC) + the basic transport (start, stop, continue, clock).

What you have in mind is the control of the Application UI, in other words, the application itself.
If this would ever be done, then it would be done using sysex messages, not noteOn/Off. But yet there is zero sysex handling in the G-Stomper apps yet (it's read to keep cursor in the incoming MIDI stream valid, but it's not sent at all). However, let's say in theory, sysex would be integrated, then controlling the application would go much further than just controlling the sequencer steps. The same would be useful to program the grid sequencers, automation curves and much more. Even switching screens would be nice. Unfortunately, I don't have the capacity at the moment for a project of this size. But I keep a note for the future. You never know.
